Only a month......

Walkin' to mommy today. You can view some of her first steps about a month ago in a previous post in November.

Here is Miss A' about one month out of taking her first steps about 6 months post "gotcha" day.....not bad. :) Honestly, when we were forever united w/Miss A' in July my first impression was that she would probably never walk without assistance (for those of you who don't know, her original referral read that she had cerebral palsy and deformed legs) Her legs were so weak with no muscle tone, and they didn't seem to track correctly. She would often lift the same leg twice in a row, throw them into strange configurations when we would "help" her move along, or just drag them behind her while we "drug" her forward.

Lesson learned for mommy (*sigh*....again. I'm not a very good student!). This girl has brought me to tears more times than I care to admit. :)

Practicing her walking w/my niece, B' and I today.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.....

We have a family tradition each year of spending Christmas Eve w/the VK family. Mom Vk puts on a great party with tons of food, fun, and fellowship. This year was no exception! We enjoyed spending a few hours w/most of the family (a few brothers and sisters-in-law were out of town.) It is always fun to see the VK family growing year after year w/new babies and new "in-laws." I love watching all of the little cousins (who all happen to be about the same size right now) run around and giggle together....super fun!
Before heading over to Mom and Dad Vk's house, we spent a quick 1/2 hour opening presents at our house (see below). The kids had a great time, and so did J' and I. I remember last year blubbering thru Christmas thinking about our daughter still in China. What a difference a year makes!
Today, we slept in, ate a big, yummy breakfast (like my momma used to make on Christmas morning), and then we were off to church. I LOVE the Christmas Day service. I LOVE singing the traditional Christmas songs, most of which make me tear up while singing (sorry, I'm sappy!) It truly is an amazing time of the year.
From our family to yours. . . . May you all have a very blessed Christmas!
Uncle Rob, Kennedy, Uncle Eric, and sweet baby Kyle.
Cousin C' opening her presents while cousin M' looks on.
J', Jr. opening his remote control cars from G'pa and G'ma Vk. . .loved it! Thank you, G'pa and G'ma.
Uncle J' waiting patiently for his turn to open a present.
The twins trying on their dress up costumes. . . such little princesses.
G'pa Dick reading Luke 2. It's a VK tradition on Christmas Eve. He suggested we try the Dutch bible this year, but since he and G'ma are the only ones that can understand it, he opted for the English version. :)
Cousin Sophie given Miss A' a Christmas smooch.
The "aftermath." Notice how Miss A' is the only one left. She was very excited to have full access to all of the trash leftover from unwrapping presents.
Oh, my boys. They never seem to want to keep their shirts on. :) Here, J', Sr. is showing J',Jr. his new blankey and Wii game from G'pa and G'ma Smith. J' was really excited to have a new tractor blanket made by G'ma Donna.
Miss M' checkin' out her new pj's.

The Reason for the Season....

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem: because he was of the house and lineage of David: To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with Child. And so it was, that while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the in. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hose praising God, and saying Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luke 2: 1-14

Rejoicing in her naughtiness??

Yup, you read that correctly. If you know me well, you know that I like things "just so." I like my house neat and tidy. I like my kids to act "orderly" (although this doesn't happen very often.....I have two energetic, rambunctious boys!), and I have been told on more than one occasion that I run a pretty tight ship (if you know my dad, you would understand where my behavior comes from. Love my dad! I appreciate in his efficiency!) My kids teeth are brushed 2-3 times a day, and their hair is normally neatly combed. I like my laundry folded and put away and my cupboards organized. I would never leave the house w/out all the beds made, the dishes washed, and the bathroom sort of sparkly. My lawn is usually mowed 2 x's per week during peak growing season, and I try to be on top of weeding out the beds. No, I am certainly not professing any sort of "super mom" ability, so don't roll your eyes while reading this and say, "oh please!" I'm just sharing my weaknesses, or what some would consider obsessiveness. I now have dishes in the sink, blankets thrown about the house, laundry that is folded, but not put away, and please DO NOT LOOK IN MY CUPBOARDS!!! Things may just fall out at you. :) My lawn looks "shaggy," and my flowerbeds are full of weeds. My boys have gone to church w/out their hair combed down, their teeth brushed, and sporting mismatched socks.

Things have changed quite dramatically around here over the past few months. What I used to take pride in doing has gone by the wayside. I have reluctantly given up on some of my old ways, and focused on chasing Miss A' around the house. A' can normally be found pulling everything out of the drawers, throwing my "throw pillows" all over the living room floor (gasp.....drives me batty!), chucking toys in every direction, and she can't seem to get enough of the bathroom, toilet included. I even caught her going up our staircase yesterday, which was a little scary (but exciting to see at the same time!). She can light up the room w/not only her smile, but also her lungs (girl can throw some pretty embarrassing tantrums!) She now wines when she doesn't get her way, and can even arch her back into impossible positions when refusing to do something. She scratches at her brother, and pulls her sisters hair. She throws her cup across the room when she's done, and tries to upend her dinner plate to get out of eating.

Perhaps you may be thinking, "so....don't most kids do this?" Well the answer is "no!" A' didn't do any of these things when we got home. She preferred staring at the ceiling while sucking on her fingers. She preferred to be left alone, and she preferred to not have anything to do with her siblings. Noise overwhelmed her, and she would find a quiet corner to retreat to whenever she was experiencing too much stimulation. She wasn't able to cope w/outside stimuli and would become quite agitated whenever she was in a new environment. Not anymore! A' is a social butterfly!

I never thought that I would actually look forward to seeing my child throw a tantrum, or have a public meltdown, but I rejoice in seeing her personality finally shine thru. Of course, at some point we would prefer her to establish appropriate public/private behavior, but for now, we thank the Lord for continuing to heal our daughter and providing her with amazing therapists that "get her."

As always....thank you for your prayers!

Thanksgiving, a little late....

Part of the North Pole.
J', D', Syd, and M' on the boat deck.

Very blury, but it was beautiful!
G'pa and D' making there way down to the boat.

Our "cruise ship."

How many hands does it take to fix a snowmobile?? I'm happy to report that they got it running again. :)

G'pa took the g-kids on all kinds of 4 wheeler rides thru the woods of North Idaho. Here, M' and Cousin Syd are not so patiently waiting for yet another one. (Not to worry Uncle Jon.....they still love your 4 wheeler, too!)

Fireworks show on Lake Coeur D' Alene.
This year, we were able to make it over to Idaho for Thanksgiving. This is the first year that we have gone for a "holiday getaway" since my parents big move a few years ago. My mom and dad were thrilled to spend a few days w/the g-kids and had all kinds of fun activities planned. The first day, we spent at my sister and brother-in-laws house. My sister prepared a FANTASTIC holiday spread!! Yummo! On Friday, my mom and dad took us all to a Christmas parade and firework show near their home. Beautiful! I wish my camera took better pics at night b/c these don't do it any justice. On Saturday, my folks took us all on a Christmas cruise around Lake Coeur D' Alene. It was "Santa"themed, and when we finally arrived at our final destination (the North Pole), Santa called out the kids by name and welcomed them. They were completely floored!

We are incredibly blessed to have such an amazing family on both sides. Thank you, Mom and Dad Smith and Mom and Dad VK for being such amazing parents and grandparents. We love you!

She walks.....

Yippee! A' surprised her G'ma and G'pa while we were visiting them in Idaho for Thanksgiving. This video was taken on Thanksgiving day at my sister and brother-in law's house. A's coordination continues to improve and she is getting pretty steady with her new skill. She still has to be gently nudged to remind her that it's quicker to get around upright, but it's pretty amazing! Yay Miss A!!
